Broadcast Services

pic1 Producer engineer David Lefeber has been working in broadcast sound since 1985 when he joined the staff at BBC TV Centre. After leaving in 1993 to first do a BA in Music and then a Masters in Contemporary-Music Aesthetics, he continued in broadcast, freelancing for various BBC programme strands, Carlton, ITN, Reuters, Meridian, BBC Wales, S4C, HTV and many independent clients.

In BBC Radio, David has worked both on location and in Maida Vale Studio 1 to produce and engineer large-scale dual-purpose music recordings for Radio Three and various UK record labels (including an opera at ENO and contemporary works with the BBC Singers).

We can cater for national as well as local broadcasters. David has 100s of hours of TV mixing experience in everything from sport, lifestyle to news, as well as music.

Delivery for Radio can be from CD-R, BWAV files in 24bit 48kHz via data CDs or DVD or uploaded to the broadcaster via ftp. By prior arrangement we can upload directly to the new BBC Radio VCS delivery system.

The METIER Mobile
Designed to provide an uncluttered, ideal environment for recording live acoustic music events, the METIER Productions’ sound vehicle can also be used for speech-based programmes or special events.

inside mobile

  • This new vehicle is based around a Yamaha DM1000v2 (which is widely used by Studio Managers throughout the BBC)
  • Monitoring is on PMC (Stereo) and Genelec (surround) controlled by SPL’s Surround Monitor Controller.
  • Metering is with BBC ballistics PPMs
  • Acoustically treated to minimise unwanted noise from outside and to provide an ideal mixing environment for live or delayed relay sound control
  • TC Electronics Triple C digital compressor guarantees no level overs - Programme can be recorded to Alesis HD24 (24bit, 24track), as BWAV files, DAT or CD-R.
  • Commentator boxes can be provided
  • Standard talkback facilities are available
  • Live links with the studio can be provided via codec or satellite (special order)
  • UPS power supplies keep things running in case of a short power break to the single 13amp RCD protected supply
  • A small PA can be provided for on-stage announcers
  • Video tie lines allow for video monitors in the mixing position

  • Soon to be fitted:
  • Stage-box mic amps linked by MADI fibre-optic to the van (currently analogue multicore).
  • Steiberg’s Nuendo system will become the main multitrack system (currently Alesis HD24XR) allowing hard drives to be taken away with an entire project on.

  • Examples of where the METIER Production Mobile excels:

    (1) Radio coverage in stereo of public concerts
    (2) Radio discussion programmes or round tables, with or without an audience
    (3) Television music coverage in stereo or surround. A stereo recording could be fed either direct to video machines in a vision OB truck or to a number of single cameras around the stage. A timecode stereo recording can also be made for laying onto pictures in the edit. In the case of a surround recording, a stereo guide mix could be given the cameras whilst a surround mix is recorded together with timecode to multitrack or simply a multitrack made of all the stage sources for later mixing.
    (4) The mobile is an ideal complement to smaller OB trucks with limited sound facilities or where a surround mix is required. Staff in the production area of the OB truck hardly need know that sound are occupying a different vehicle, except that it will sound better! Full talkback facilities are available.
    (5) In addition, the METIER Production Mobile offers the ideal quiet environment for recording voice tracks during a production with tielines between the vehicle’s cab space and the production area. This can be operated independently of the main mix.
